Year two Fine Art degree students at University Centre Somerset display their work in Taunton Exhibition
What connects a community as a group? Is it their geography, their politics, their identity or something else? Are they centrally organised or a loose collective? What are their passions, hopes and points of view? What struggles do they face? What would make the world a better place for them?
Year two Fine Art degree students at University Centre Somerset have investigated and responded to these questions and more. They have struck up conversations, spent time with local communities, observed idiosyncrasies and banter, paid attention to their perspectives and got a glimpse of how they tick. The artists’ responses have then been documented at ‘We The People’, an exhibition taking place 13 January – 19 February at the Brewhouse in Taunton.
Three artists have contributed their work to this event: Trudy Long, Rebecca Mitchell, and Lauren Darling. Trudy Long asks through her work what home means to different people. Her investigations have ranged from community groups to participants in Taunton Pride. Rebecca Mitchell has responded to communities of patients in Musgrove Park Hospital and challenges faced by those with disabilities. Meanwhile, Lauren Darling has focussed on the issue of period poverty within the current financial crisis.
Having seen their exhibition come together, Course Leader Mark Fearbunce said:
“I am immensely proud of all three students involved. They have created an amazing exhibition of thought provoking, high-quality work. Their professionalism as artists is exemplary. Each student has dealt with relevant contemporary issues with intelligence, sensitivity, and creativity.”
