Sports Students in St Lucia

University Centre Somerset’s Sport Science and Coaching students have returned from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Caribbean island of St Lucia! This trip was focused around volunteering with the charity United Through Sport, who are dedicated to empowering children by promoting physical activity, health, and education.

During their time in St Lucia, the students engaged with local communities by delivering coaching sessions in schools, community projects, and a district football team. They planned engaging sessions to ensure their activities were challenging, inclusive, and enjoyable for participants of all ages and abilities. This experience allowed them to apply the knowledge and skills that they have developed through their degree, testing their abilities in real-world settings.

When the students weren’t coaching, they spent their time embracing the Caribbean culture. Exploring the natural wonders of the island involved hiking the stunning Pigeon Island National Park, visiting waterfalls, and experiencing the sulphur baths of the Piton Mountains. They also immersed themselves in local traditions, joining a lively street party where they enjoyed local music and food.

Nath Thomas, Course Leader, said: "It was incredibly rewarding to see our students not only apply their skills in a meaningful way but also immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of St Lucia. This trip has been a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth, and I’m excited to continue this partnership with United Through Sport for years to come."

Joshua Guest, one of the students said: “It was an extraordinary trip, with a great blend of culture and coaching experience. It’s really allowed us to see the Caribbean in a different way. 10/10 would recommend".

Due to the success of this first trip, we are already planning to make this an annual trip for the Sport Science and Coaching Degree students.
