University Centre Somerset staff and students travelled up to Coventry for The Prosthetics Event in November.
The annual event is described as an ‘epic day of learning, shopping and networking for people passionate about prosthetics, mad about media make-up and curious about creatures!’
As well as being used in film and TV, creative prosthetics are also found in theatre, live events, cosplay, tourist attractions, casualty simulation and many more places besides.
UCS Media Make-up was among the exhibitors, with current students and alumni giving three demonstrations throughout the day. Ellie, from our third year, did editorial face paint style make-up. Lucy, who graduated this year, did a full prosthetic make-up and wig application and Lowri, an alumni student who graduated a few years ago, did an avant-garde style make-up look.
Current third year student, Ray, with help from fellow student Leanna, took part in an Application Station competition, which showcases the work of eight exciting up-and-coming artists from across the country, applying body paint and full-scale prosthetic make-up.
Students had the opportunity to network with top industry professionals, receiving advice on the industry and current materials and techniques, and insights into the exciting direction that the industry is heading in. They built connections for the future and reconnected with some top industry names who have collaborated with the UCS previously (such as Valentina Visintin and Sangeet Prabhaker).
The students came away feeling inspired and full of ideas for their next projects.
