University Centre Somerset celebrated an outstanding set of results across its suite of BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering qualifications last summer.
Almost 250 students studied for an HNC or HND qualification in Engineering in 2016-17 and 96% successfully completed their study with more than 65% of our HNC/HND Engineering students passing with a Distinction or Merit grade. The Principal awarded a commendation to 46 students in recognition of achieving a Distinction in at least five units during the year.
Chris Hughes from Baker Hughes completed the HNC in Mechanical Engineering this year and commented, “I found that the HNC course was well suited for me academically and in the workplace. Being an apprentice that hopes to move to a more senior role, the HNC has given me an academic advantage and a step in the right direction. I found that the subjects within the HNC were very relevant to the job role I have. The college lecturers were very supportive and had a good understanding of the engineering field”.
University Centre Somerset runs a variety of HE qualifications within the popular field of Engineering including Level 4 and Level 5 Higher National Certificates (HNCs and HNDs) in Electronics, Production, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Nuclear. Learners benefit from the College’s experienced teaching team and cutting-edge facilities across the campuses in Bridgwater and Cannington.
The Energy Skills Centre, the Advanced Engineering Centre (which opened its doors last September) and the National College for Nuclear (which opened in February), are examples of substantial investments in innovation which are constantly made to improve our facilities and to provide students with exceptional learning environments with workshops and laboratories for their education and training.
Chris Hunt, Head of Engineering at University Centre Somerset commented: “I would like to congratulate all of the Higher National Engineering students who graduated in 2017. Higher Nationals are an increasingly popular option as they enable learners to achieve an HE qualification alongside gaining practical work experience enabling graduates to progress more quickly into senior roles in local engineering businesses. The start of a new year is an ideal time to start to think about career development and my team are keen to speak to anyone thinking about advancing their engineering career this year”.
