Our Art & Design Foundation Diploma students recently embarked on an inspiring visit to the Museum of Somerset in Taunton. This exciting collaboration between UCS, the Museum, and The Brewhouse Theatre offers students a unique opportunity to engage with local heritage and showcase their creative talents.
During their visit, the students had the opportunity to explore fascinating exhibits such as The Giant's Shoes, The Cheddar Brooch, The Tree of Somerset, and Monmouth's Buckle. Guided by curators Amal, Sarah, and Sean, the group delved into the stories and history behind these artefacts. The visit encouraged students to consider themes, concepts, and visuals, including colour, pattern, form, and shape.
The students are now busy creating a range of artistic responses using an array of techniques, including digital art, ceramics, printmaking, photography, and painting. The project will culminate in a unique exhibition at The Brewhouse Theatre.
Course Leader Richard Shaffner shared his excitement about the project,
"We are really excited to be working with two of the big cultural spaces in Taunton; the Museum and The Brewhouse Theatre. The students are an amazing bunch and are beginning to develop an incredible sense of creativity, using a huge array of techniques and processes.
The show at The Brewhouse promises to be a really exciting and unique exhibition. Working with the curators and technical teams at both the Museum and The Brewhouse will give the students valuable experience in collaborating with creative, cultural, and heritage professionals, helping them gain insight into the hugely important and dynamic creative industries in the UK."
Stay tuned for updates as the students prepare to share their creations in what promises to be an inspiring celebration of art, history, and creativity.
