University Centre Somerset and Bridgwater & Taunton College are home Brainworks Records. This student-run record label gives students the creative freedom to create, market and distribute their music the way they want.
The label is partnered with Believe distribution, allowing the artists to distribute their music globally online with focused, targeted campaigns. Over the course of 4 years the label has amassed over two million streams and has been the springboard for many of our students’ careers in music. A number of their releases have been aired on Radio 1 and BBC Music Introducing. Students music released by the label has also been reviewed and written up in influential music blogs and publications such as God is in the TV, The Quietus, and Vice.
Brainworks is a unique label, with every aspect of it run (under the guidance of our industry experienced lecturing team) by students. That includes everything from music creation, to video and artwork, to marketing and release logistics. All of these tasks are factored into the students’ education syllabus via modules such as Music Industry, Studio Recording Techniques, and Events Management and Production. We also work closely with our excellent photography and media department who facilitate and arrange industry-standard photography, music videos, and live performance stream opportunities for the label.
Brainworks Records and our electronic music offshoot label, Subsurrender, offer a truly unique industry-focused experience for our students. We have received praise from BBC Music Introducing and numerous industry figures for the structure and opportunity the labels offer our students on their journey into the music industry and creative world.
